I could feel the knife beneath me. I don’t know how. I wasn’t touching it.

It stayed secured in its sheath, tucked away underneath the driver’s seat of my Jag. Calling to me. Urging me to take it. To run my fingertips over the serrated edges before plunging it into my prey.

I watched him through the window of a cafe. His face lit up and his mouth opened in a laugh as another man, or more like boy, waved his hands in the air. A blonde hung off of Ricky’s arm, smiling every time his mouth moved. Even when the others chimed in, she didn’t glance their way. She only had eyes for Ricky.

So did I.

My fingers twitched as I envisioned the knife that was within my reach. Blood. That’s what I wanted, and it had nothing to do with the darkness. I didn’t care about his screams or putting him in my vault, justice or ridding the world of him. My mind wasn’t level like it was when I purged. It was chaotic. Violent in a way that had my veins surging with rage as opposed to excitement.

What the fuck was this?

I kept seeing him on the tapes I’d had when I was studying Holly. I’d since burned them, but the evidence was still there in my mind. The erratic jerk of his hips, the way his forehead wrinkled as he watched Holly. As if he was trying to figure her out. He never turned his back on her. Even when he walked away he would peer over his shoulder.

I noticed these things. It had intrigued me, but that’s where the emotion ended. Until now. Now, I could see everything. Hear everything. Only I knew that was all my imagination because the tapes didn’t have audio.

Why? Why didn’t I set them up differently? Why had I taken the camera down before the last day? I fucking knew my reasons for the latter, but I no longer cared about them. All my efforts to ensure I didn’t get caught had been wasted. Because of him. He’d called the police and now that the tapes were destroyed, I felt like I was missing something.

I remembered the way he looked at her. Like she was crazy, maybe even sad. But no matter how much I tried I couldn’t remember the way she looked at him. What if she loved him?

What if, James? Who cares?

My fingers twitched again and I gripped the steering wheel to stop them. Ricky flicked his gaze to the blonde and gave her a wide smile. Her eyes gleamed and she snuggled into the arm draped over her.

I’d seen looks like that before. Sometimes it was between husband and wife. More often it was between younger couples, probably dating. Maybe engaged.

No one ever looked at me that way. I hadn’t cared before I witnessed it between Ricky and the blonde. It’d been yet another human experience that I’d never have, and I was fine with it.

I let out a breath and forced my gaze away from the diner.
